If you watch any world-class marathon, you'll see that runners have started taking a page from cyclists-they're all wearing arm warmers in cold weather. Well, cyclists are doing like the runners, too.

For years, women's world record holder Paula Radcliffe has raced in compression calf guards to stave off fatigue and soreness.

Pro cyclists, too, use compression wear, which promises to increase circulation and, therefore, increase your muscles' endurance and waste-flushing ability, and reduce muscle damage.

Compression tights, calf guards and other products from 2XU, an Australian company, have been worn by several domestic pro cycling teams, including Slipstream, Jelly Belly and HealthNet.

They're not magic, but the 2XU calf guards ($50) I've been wearing to ride and run do make my legs feel fresh and less sore the day after a punishing workout.

As a new triathlete who also engages in that extreme, fourth life sport-sitting at a desk chair for most of the day-I spend a frustrating amount of time staving off aches and pains and trying not to get injured, especially in my lower legs.

The calf guards feel to me like they offer a layer of protection against muscle tweaks and strains.
