The first round, which was won by Team Trisports’ Adam Laycock, involved a very chilly 750m swim, windy 23km bike leg and off-road 5km two-lap run, saw some great performances by athletes from the Hitchin-based club.

Setting a great time, Steffan Ford clocked 1:12:52 to get his Club Championship off to a flying start with a second place finish.

Fellow squad athlete James Foy finished just off the podium in fourth, with elite Ironman specialist Gavin May one place behind.

There was also success for the squad’s female athletes, with Gemma Sargent winning the opening round of the women’s championship with a time of 1:22:26. In second place, Team Trisports Kate Turner had a strong race with a time of 1:24:34. And overcoming a recent training accident and resulting injuries, Katy Jinks finished an excellent third in a time of 1:25:16.
